Cheap Eats: Bahn Mi Saigon

7:42 PM

So as a college student I am always looking for some cheap eats, and living in New York City it sometimes feels like searching for a needle in a hay stack. In a city where some restaurants charge you 15 dollars for regular grilled cheese, I get really excited when I stumble upon awesome food for an even better price.

Ever since I had that Bahn Mi inspired hot dog at Smorgasburg (Read Here), I have been searching for the real thing. Last week I tried one at Nicky's in Brooklyn, and it was good, but for $6.50 it was nothing compared to Bahn Mi Saigon Bakery. Located in China Town, borderline Little Italy, Saigon did not only have cheap delicious food, but was extremely clean.

I chose the BBQ Pork Sandwich (wonderful choice).

The last time I head of a sandwich this cheap was Subway's 5 dollar foot longs, and this was twice as much food. For 4.25 I got a sandwich packed with BBQ pork, cucumbers, jalapeños (if you don't want it spicy they won't put them in), fresh carrot and radish slaw, all topped off with fresh springs of cilantro. It was amazing, the bread was toasted just enough so that the outside was crunchy but the inside was nice and soft.

The pork was crunchy and soft, a weird combination, and surprisingly not greasy at all; the cucumbers and jalapeños added a crunchy dimension to the sandwich. The real star however was the carrot and radish slaw giving this sandwich such a fresh taste. (My boyfriend would disagree, he's a pork man.)
